Hello,

The family in Thailand is extremely important to Thai’s. Showing respect and love to your family is vital in Thai society and is one of the key elements in Thai culture.

Today let’s look at some Thai Family Vocabulary:

Father                                              = พ่อ /pɔ̂ɔ/

Father-in-law (of the wife)          = พ่อสามี /pɔ̂ɔ sǎa-mii/

Father-in-law (of the husband)  = พ่อตา /pɔ̂ɔ dtaa/

Mother                                             = แม่ /mɛ̂ɛ/

Mother-in-law (of the bride)       = แม่สามี /mɛ̂ɛ sǎa-mii/

Mother-in-law (of the gloom)      = แม่ยาย /mɛ̂ɛ yaai/

Child                                                  = ลูก /lûuk/

Daughter                                           = ลูกสาว /lûuk săao/

Daughter-in-law                              = ลูกสะใภ้ /lûuk sà-pái/

Son                                                     = ลูกชาย /lûuk chaai/

Son-in-law                                       = ลูกเขย / lûuk kə̌əi/

Cousins                                            = ลูกพี่ลูกน้อง /lûuk-pîi lûuk-nɔ́ng/

Siblings (brothers & sisters)       = พี่น้อง /pîi-nɔ́ng/

Elder brother                                 = พี่ชาย /pîi-chaai/

Brother-in-law (older one)          = พี่เขย /pîi-kə̌əi/

Elder sister                                    = พี่สาว /pîi-săao/

Sister-in-law (older one)             = พี่สะใภ้ /pîi sà-pái/

Younger brother                           = น้องชาย /nɔ́ng-chaai/

Brother-in-law (younger one)    = น้องเขย /nɔ́ng-kə̌əi/

Younger sister                                = น้องสาว /nɔ́ng-săao/

Sister-in-law (younger one)        = น้องสะใภ้ /nɔ́ng sà-pái/

Grandchildren                               = หลาน /lăan/

Nephew / grandson                      = หลานชาย /lăan-chaai/

Niece / granddaughter                = หลานสาว /lăan-săao/

Relatives                                         = ญาติ /yâat/
