Tongue twisters can be hard in any language and the Thai can be particulary hard. Many foreigners find it hard to differentiate the Thai Tones with similar Sounds. Thai is a Tonal language if you pronounce a word with a different Tone or length of Vowel you change the meaning of the word – in many cases you are saying a different word. Try these Thai Tongue Twisters below. This will help you achieve clear Sounds and Tones.

Be warned …the meanings really do change if you get the tone and sounds wrong!!!!

Here are some examples below.

1/ ‘ K ’ sound

เสียง ‘ข กับ สระ เอา /อา + เสียงวรรณยุกต์ เอก โท ตรี จัตวา’
เขา เข้า ไป อ่าน ข่าว และ กิน ข้าว ขาว

káo kâo bpai àan kàao lɛ́ gin kâao kǎao

He enters to read news and eat white rice

2/ ‘ ng ’ sound

เสียงพยัญชนะต้น ‘ง งู’
งู เหงา งง ง่วง ง่าย งู งง ทำงาน ง่าย ไม่ได้ เงิน

nguu ngǎo ngong nguâng ngaâi, nguu ngong tam-ngaan ngaâi mâi dâai ngəən

A lonely sleepy but lazy snake does not understand why when he works half-heatedly he does not get much money

3/ ‘ bp – b – p ’ sound

เสียงพยัญชนะต้น ป / บ / พ กับ สระ อา/อู และ เสียงวรรณยุกต์ สามัญ เอก โท
ป้า บ้า พา ปู่ ไป ปา ปู และ ปลา ใน ป่า

4/ ‘ pák/ pàk / pâak ’ sound

เสียงพยัญชะต้น พ กับ สระ อะ/อา และ เสียงวรรณยุกต์ เอก โท ตรี
คนไทย ไป พัก กิน ผัก และ ผัดไทย ที่ ภาคใต้

kon Thai bpai pák gin pàk lɛ́ Pàd-Thai tîi pâak dtâai

Thai people go on vacation to eat vegetables and Pàd-Thai in Southern Thailand

5/ ‘ glai vs glâI ’ sound

เสียงพยัญชะต้น ก กับ สระ ไอ/ใอ และเสียงวรรณยุกต์ สามัญ เอก โท
ไก่ อยู่ ใกล้ กุ้ง อยู่ ไกล

gài yùu glâi, gûng yùu glai

The chicken is nearby, the shrimp is faraway

6/ ‘ bpèd / pèd /bpɛ̀ɛd ’ sound

เสียงพยัญชะต้น ป/ผ กับ สระ เอะ/แอ และเสียงวรรณยุกต์ เอก
เอา เป็ด เผ็ดเผ็ด 8 จาน

Ao bpèd pèd-pèd bpɛ̀ɛd jaan

May I have eight plates of spicy duck please?

7/ ‘ sùa /sᵾâ/ sᵾ̌a ’ sound

เสียงพยัญชะต้น ส กับ สระ เอือ และเสียงวรรณยุกต์ เอก โท จัตวา
เสือ ใส่ เสื้อ สี ส้ม นั่ง บน เสื่อ สวย

sᵾ̌a sài sᵾâ sǐi sôm nâng bon sùa suǎi

Tiger wears an orange shirt and sits on the beautiful mat

8/ ‘ maa/ máa / maǎ ’ sound

เสียงพยัญชะต้น ม กับ สระ อา และเสียงวรรณยุกต์ สามัญ ตรี จัตวา
ม้า มา กับ หมา

máa maa gàp maǎ

The horse comes with the dog

9/ ‘ kìi kîi vs máa mǎa ’ sound

เสียงพยัญชะต้น ข/ม กับ สระอี/อา และเสียงวรรณยุกต์ สามัญ เอก โท ตรี จัตวา
หมา มา ขี้ / ม้า มา ขี่ หมา/ ม้า ดู ขี้ ม้า และ ขี้ หมา

mǎa maa kîi, máa maa kìi mǎa, máa duu kîi máa lɛ́ kîi mǎa

The dog comes to poop, the horse comes to ride on the dog

The horse looks at his poop and dog’s poop

10/ ‘ yaa/ ỳaa /yâa vs taa/ tâa ’ sound

เสียงพยัญชะต้น ย/ท กับ สระ อา และเสียงวรรณยุกต์ สามัญ เอก โท
ย่า อย่า หย่า ปู่ ถ้า ปู่ ทา ยา ย่า

yâa ỳaa ỳaa bpùu tâa bpùu taa yaa yâa

Grandmom, please do not decide to get a divorce from grandpa if he applies medicine for healing grandmom’s wound!

Remark:

ỳaa: อย่า [do not] has the same sound as ỳaa: หย่า

[get divorced], but have different spellings.
