คุณเคยถูกหวยไหม kun kəəi tùuk húai mái Have you ever won the Thai Lottery?
Most Thais want to win the lottery! This is Thai national lottery run by the Thai Government. The dates of the draw are the first and sixteenth of each month. Lottery drawings are broadcast on T.V. and radio and the results will be posted on The Government Lottery Office website.
So, I will give you Thai phrases and vocabulary about the Lottery here 🙂
To say “the Lottery” is “hǔai” หวย (casual), “sà-làak-gin-bɛ̀ɛng-ráttabaan” สลากกินแบ่งรัฐบาล (officially) and sometimes we also say “lɔ́t-təə-rîi” ลอตเตอรี่ (lottery) too. Furthermore, they also mean “the lottery ticket”.
To say “to win the lottery” or “to win a prize in the lottery”, we say “tùuk hǔai” ถูกหวย even though you won 1,000 baht or 100,000 baht. If you want to specify that you won the first prize, you can say, “pǒm / chán tùuk hǔai raang-wan tîi nʉ̀ng” ผม/ฉันถูกหวยรางวัลที่หนึ่ง.
To say “I didn’t win a prize in the lottery,” we will say “pǒm / chán mâi tùuk hǔai” ผม/ฉันไม่ถูกหวย. As “pǒm / chán tùuk (hǔai) gin” ผม/ฉันถูก(หวย)กิน (casual) means “The lottery ate my money.”
We say “lúun” ลุ้น when people are waiting for the lottery result with anticipation and they really hoping to win it.
e.g. วันนี้แดงและเพื่อน ๆ จะไปลุ้นหวยทางทีวีด้วยกัน wannîi Dang lɛ́ pʉ̂an pʉ̂an jà bpai lúun hǔai taang tii-vii dûai gan
Today Dang and his friends are going to wait for the lottery result on T.V. together.
To ask “What is the winning lottery numbers?”, we say “hǔai ɔ̀ɔk (lêk) à-rai” หวยออก(เลข)อะไร
