Learn Thai: Question Word “Why” ทำไม

How to Say Why in Thai Language | ทำไมทำไม Why in Thai Language

Hi everyone,

In this blog, we will learn about the Thai question word “ทำไม” /tam-mai/.

ทำไม means “why”, this question word normally occurs at the beginning of the question.

When you answer the question “why”, you will reply by “เพราะว่า” /prɔ́ wâa/ which it means “because”.

For example,

A: ทำไมคุณอยากเรียนภาษาไทย /tam-mai kun yàak rian paa-sǎa thai?/

Why do you want to learn Thai?

B: เพราะว่าฉันอยากพูดกับคนไทย /prɔ́ wâa chán yàak pûut gàp kon thai/

Because I want to talk to Thai people.

If you put “ทำไม” at the end of the question, it can carry a sense of discontent.

มาทำไม /maa tam mai!?/

Why do you come?!

Hope you enjoy learning the Thai language. See you next blog ^_^
