Souvenirs from Thailand | The North of Thailand reflect the deep and fascinating culture of the local Thais and their unique culture. In this short lesson, I will give you a few examples that struck me as being interesting.

คุณชอบไปเที่ยวไหมคะ /kun chɔ̂ɔp bpai tîaw mái ká/ Do you like travelling? If you do, the north of Thailand is one of my key recommendations. There is nice weather, beautiful landscapes, interesting culture, delicious food and kind people. Want to go already?

During the trip, if you are looking to buy a souvenir of your Thai trip to the North of Thailand then try the following – watch out though most food products cannot be taken back by plane. Oh well, you will have to eat them instead!

1. น้ำพริกหนุ่มกับแคบหมู /nám-prík-nùm gàp kɛ̂ɛp-mǔu/ Green Chili Paste and Pork Cracklings

This is a popular snack that you can find in Warorot Market (Kad Luang). ตลาดวโรรส (กาดหลวง)

2. ลำไยอบแห้ง /lam-yai òp hɛ̂ɛng/ Dried Longan

Dried Longan

As longan is one of the fruits that you can grow well in the northern climate of Thailand, so you will see this fruit a lot. You can eat it fresh with a very sweet taste, or the dried one is another way to eat. Also, you can use the dried longan as the ingredient in some drinks or Thai dessert.

3. ไส้อั่ว /sâi ùa/ Northern Thai Style Sausage

The North of Thailand Sausage ไส้อั่ว This is pork with herbal sausage. It is very easy to find at the local food shop.

4. ไม้แกะสลัก /gɛ̀-sà-làk/ Wood Carving

The famous place for the wood carving is the night bazaar in Chiang mai and also in the Ban Chang Nak, San Kam Phaeng district.  Most of the carvings are include elephants and jungle scenes.

5. ร่มบ่อสร้าง /rôm bɔ̀ɔ-sâang/ Bo Sang Umbrella

Visit Bo Sang district in Chiangmai and you will find handicrafts and the unique, colourful and floral motif umbrella. Also in late January, there is the Bo Sang Umbrella Festival (เทศกาลร่ม têet-sà-gaan rôm) that you should check it out!

ของที่ระลึก  /kɔ̌ɔng-tîi-rá-lᵾ́k/ = Souvenir

ของฝาก  /kɔ̌ɔng-fàak/ = gift (that you buy for somebody when you return from your trip)

ตลาด  /dtà-làat/ =  market

เทศกาล  /têet-sà-gaan/  festival
