Learn Thai: Verb to be in Thai – Bpen and yùu/ เป็น,อยู่

How to say to be in Thai language

Sa-wat-dii ka ,How was your Songkran holiday? I hope everyone enjoys playing with water. In this Thai lesson, we are going to learn about how to use “verb to be“ in Thai.

1.verb to be + noun (human) =’’ bpen’’  which means to be something

For example

chán bpen kon Thai          I am Thai.         ฉันเป็นคนไทย

*Negative of “bpen” is “ mâi châi”

For example: chán mâi châi kon Thai    I am not Thai.    ฉันไม่ใช่คนไทย

káo mâi châi nák-rian    He is not a student.  เขาไม่ใช่นักเรียน

** Remember!! In Thai, we don’t use Verb to be with Adjective.

For example

He is very handsome = káo lɔ̀ɔ mâak mâak   เขาหล่อมาก มาก

( We don’t say káo bpen lɔ̀ɔ mâak mâak )

2.The verb to be +prepositions+places = ‘’ yùu’’ which means to be somewhere

For example

pîi-chaai kɔɔng chán yùu tîi bprà-teet yîi bpùn.

My older brother lives in Japan.

พี่ชายของฉันอยู่ที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่น

bɔ-rì-sàt kɔɔng pǒm yùu tîi Grung-teep.

My office is in Bangkok.

บริษัทของผมอยู่ที่กรุงเทพฯ

Negative of “ yùu “ is “mâi yùu “

For example:

chán mâi yùu bâan     I’m not at home.  ฉันไม่อยู่บ้าน
