Hi everyone in this Thai lesson online we will talk about the verb Come and Go which are used as a secondary verb in Thai. In Thai action verbs called Secondary Verbs are put after the main verb of the sentence to show the direction of action.
ไป / bpai / to go
This shows that the action is moving away from the speaker.
- เจนเดินไปที่รถไฟฟ้า /Jane dәәn bpai tîi rót-fai fáa/ Jane walks to the BTS.
- หมูออกไปข้างนอกแล้ว /Moo ɔ̀ɔk bpai kâang-nɔɔk lɛ́ɛw/ Moo ’s gone outside already.
- เขานั่งรถไฟไปเชียงใหม่ /káo nâng rót-fai bpai chiang-mài/ He takes the train to Chiang Mai.
- นักเรียนขี่จักรยานไปโรงเรียน /nák-rian kìi jàk-grà-yaan bpai roong-rian/ A student riding his bicycle to school.
- หญิงขับรถไปทำงานทุกวัน /yǐng kàp-rót bpai tam-ngaan túk-wan/ Ying drives to work every day.
มา / maa / to come
Here the action is toward the speaker:
- เชิญเข้ามาข้างในค่ะ /chәәn kâo maa kâang-nai kâ/ Please come inside.
- คุณจะกลับมาประเทศไทยเมื่อไหร่คะ /kun jà glàp maa bprà-teet Thai meûa-rài ká/ When are you coming back to Thailand?
- คุณเดินมาที่นี่ใช่ไหมคะ /kun dəən maa tîi-nîi châi-mái ká/ You walk here, don’t you?
- เขาเพิ่งวิ่งมาจากตลาด /káo pə̂ng wîng maa jàak dtà-làat/ He has just run from the market (to here).
- เรานั่งรถเมล์มาที่นี่ /rao nâng rót mee maa tîi-nî/ We took the public bus here.
