Conjunction | That | ว่า wâa

In this blog, we will talk about the some Thai Grammar, the Conjunction word ว่า /wâa/ in the Thai language.
ว่า /wâa/ usually follows verbs of speech though, and mind. It can be translated as ‘that’, ‘as’, ‘if’, or ‘whether’. But sometimes you cannot translate ว่า /wâa/ at all.
The pattern of ว่า /wâa/ is;
verb + ว่า /wâa/ + context
These followings are some words that you can use with ว่า /wâa/
พูด /pûut/ to say
eg. เขาพูดว่าอยากเรียนภาษาไทย /káo pûut wâa yàak rian paa-sǎa thai/
= He said that he wanted to learn Thai.
คิด /kít/ to think
eg. ฉัน (ผม) คิดว่าฝนกำลังจะตก /chán (pǒm) kít wâa fǒn gam-lang jà dtòk/
= I think that it is going to rain.
รู้ /rúu/ to know
eg. ไม่รู้ว่าเขาจะมาไหม /mâi rúu wâa káo jà maa mái/
= I don’t know if he will come.
อ่าน /àan/ to read
eg. นี่อ่านว่า “โรงเรียน” /nîi àan wâa roong-rian/
= This is read as “roong-rian”
เรียก /rîak/ to call
eg. นี่ภาษาไทยเรียกว่าอะไร /nîi paa-sǎa thai rîak wâa à-rai?/
= What is this called in Thai?
แปล /bplɛɛ/ to translate
eg. อันนี้แปลว่าอะไร /an-níi bplɛɛ wâa à-rai?/
= What does this one mean?
สัญญา /sǎn-yaa/ to promise
eg. เขาสัญญาว่าจะซื้อของขวัญให้ฉัน /káo sǎn-yaa wâa jà súu kɔ̌ɔng-kwǎn hâi chán/
= He promised that he would buy a gift for me.
หวัง /wǎng/ to hope
eg. หวังว่าจะพบคุณอีก /wǎng wâa jà póp kun ìik/
= Hope to see you again.
ถาม /tǎam/ to ask
eg. เขาถามว่าโรงพยาบาลอยู่ที่ไหน /káo tǎam wâa roong-pá-yaa-baan yùu tîi nǎi/
= He asks where the hospital is.
ตอบ /dtɔ̀ɔp/ to answer
eg. ฉันตอบว่าไม่รู้ /chán dtɔ̀ɔp wâa mâi rúu/
= I answered that I don’t know.
