How to Tell the Time in Thai

Hi everybody,

It is about time to talk about “time”. I believe many of you can count in Thai and for you guys who can’t count much please don’t be alarmed, you only need to be able to count from 1 to 10 then you can tell the time! Isn’t it easy?

OK..let’s start with day time; from 6:00 – 11:00 A.M.

A.M. = moong  châo

so,  6:00 – 11:00 a.m.  =  (number) + moong  châo

for example : 10 a.m.  =  sìp moong  châo

Now it is lunch time at 12:00 a.m., we don’t say “Sìp-Sǒrng moong  châo” but we have a special word for it which is “tîang”

1 – 3 p.m. = bàai (number) moong

for example:  2 p.m. =  bàai sǒrng moong

**Please note that  for 1 p.m. we don’t say  “bàai nèung moong” but we leave out the number one out and only say “bàai moong”

4-6 p.m. = (number) moong-yen

for example:  4 p.m. = sìi moong-yen
