How talk about location in Thai | Prepositions | Grammar
The most basic location words are formed using the preposition ที่ /tîi/ (at) followed by the demonstratives, นี่ /nîi/ (this), นั่น /nân/ (that) or โน่น /nôon/ (that for further away):
- ที่นี่ /tîi nîi/ (here)
- ที่นั่น /tîi nân/ (there)
- ที่โน่น /tîi nôon/ (over there)
In a simple sentences starting the location of something, ที่ /tîi/ follows the verb /yùu (to be situated)/:
- อยู่ที่นี /yùu tîi nîi/ (Here it is., It’s here.)
- ผมไม่ได้อยู่ที่นั่น /pǒm mâi dâai yùu tîi nân/ (I was not there.)
- บ้านของเขาอยู่ที่โน่น /bâan kͻ̌ͻng káo yùu tîi nôon/ (His house is over there.)
The word ที่ /tîi/ is optional after the verb อยู่ /yùu/ and frequently omitted:
- ผมอยู่เมืองไทยนานแล้ว /pǒm yùu mʉang Thai naan lɛ́ɛo/ (I have lived in Thailand a long time already.)
- เขาอยู่บ้านตอนเย็น /káo yùu bâan dtͻͻn-yen/ (He is at home in the evenings.)
