Lák-sà-ná-naam – ลักษณนาม – Classifiers

Hi everyone. Welcome back again to our short online Thai lesson. In this lesson, we are going to learn about “Classifiers” in Thai. Actually, the actual “Classifier” word has no meaning but in Thai, we use “Classifier” to show groups of the same items. It is needed when using Thai when counting or referring to any concrete noun or your Thai friends will be confused!
In English, you use the object as a classifier for example when you say “three glasses of beer”, “one cup of coffee”. The word “glasses”, “cup” could be called classifier but in Thai, we also use other words as classifiers. You will need to know the right classified for the appropriate objects.
In this blog, I will give some example vocabulary with the classifier.
1. Kon /คน /Human being , people, person = kon / คน
2. Rót /รถ / Car = kan / คัน
3. gɛɛo /แก้ว / Glass of water,beer = gɛɛo / แก้ว
4. bâan /บ้าน / house = lăng / หลัง
5. table,chair,blouse,shirt ,pants ,skirt ,animal = dtua / ตัว
6. kùat /ขวด/ bottle = bai / ใบ /
7. nǎng-sʉ̌ʉ / หนังสือ / book = lêm /เล่ม/
8. bpàak-gaa / ปากกา / pen = dâam / ด้าม /
9. din-sͻ̌ͻ / ดินสอ / pencil = tԑ̂ԑng / แท่ง /
10. grà-dàat / กระดาษ / paper = pԑ̀ԑn / แผ่น /
11. naa-lí-gaa / นาฬิกา / watch, clock = rʉan / เรือน /
12. bù-rìi / บุหรี่ / cigarettes = muan / มวน /
13. nǎng-sʉ̌ʉ-pim / หนังสือพิมพ์ / newspaper = chà-bàp / ฉบับ /
14. nǎng / หนัง / movie = rʉ̂ang / เรื่อง /
15. hͻ̂ͻng / ห้อง / room = hͻ̂ͻng / ห้อง /
These are just some classifiers given but not worry we have so many more left for you! It’s easier when you learn new vocabulary and classifier at the same time.
