Dowry (Sin Sod) Thai Marriage Culture
สินสอด ….A common Thai marriage custom called Thai Dowry system, known as the ‘Sin Sodt’. In this traditional Thai marriage custom, the groom will be expected to pay a sum of money to the bride’s family as an act of goodwill to compensate them and to demonstrate you are financially capable of taking care of their daughter. Sometimes, this will be returned to the bridegroom after the wedding has taken place.
Thai parents tend to view marriage as being based on financial security. Hence the dowry or sin sod.No Thai family would want their daughter to marry someone who does not have an interest in the financial security of the family.
