Telling the time in Thai
land
Telling the time in Thai is not the same as in Western languages. You need to know the clock pattern used.
In this Thai lesson we will learn and practice how the clock is broken into different parts in Thai language and culture:
Thai Clock AM
> 12 am | midnight = เที่ยงคืน tîang-kʉʉn
> 1 – 5 am | very early morning = ตี __#__ / dtii __#__ /
> 6 – 11 am | morning = __#__ โมง(เช้า) / __#__ moong (cháo) /
Thai Clock PM
> 12 pm | midday – เที่ยง /tîang/
> 1 pm | early afternoon = บ่ายโมง / bàai moong /
> 2 – 3 pm | mid afternoon = บ่าย __#__ โมง / bàai __#__ moong /
> 4 – 6 pm | late afternoon = __#__ โมง(เย็น) / __#__ moong (yen) /
> 7 – 11 pm | evening = 1 – 5 + ทุ่ม / __#__ tûm /
Clock Vocabulary Examples:
เที่ยงคืนครึ่ง / tîang kʉʉn krʉ̂ng / = 00:30, 12.30 am
ตีสามสิบเจ็ดนาที / dtii sǎam sìp-jèt naa-tii / = 03:17, 3.17 am
แปดโมง (เช้า) / bpɛ̀ɛt moong (cháo) / = 08:00, 8.00 am
เที่ยงยี่สิบห้า(นาที) / tîang yîi-sìp hâa (naa-tii) / = 12:25, 12.25 pm
บ่ายโมงครึ่ง /bàai moong krʉ̂ng / = 13:30, 1.30 pm
บ่ายสอง(โมง) / bàai sɔ̌ɔng (moong) / = 14:00, 2.00 pm
ห้าโมงสี่สิบแปดนาที / hâa moong sìi-sìp bpɛ̀ɛt naa-tii / = 17:48, 5:48 pm
สี่ทุ่มห้านาที / sìi tûm hâa naa-tii /= 22:05, 10.05 pm
Practice telling the time with your Thai friends. It does take some practice to get this right.
