| To Understand

Hi everyone.

In this short Thai language lesson, we will learn the word รู้เรื่อง / rúu rʉ̂ang  – “to understand”.

Hope this Thai language blog is helpful. Enjoy speaking Thai with Thai people 🙂

The word รู้เรื่อง /rúu rʉ̂ang/ like เข้าใจ /kâo-jai / means to understand. It often occurs after the verbs ฟัง /fang / which means to listen and อ่าน /àan / means to read as a ‘resultative verb’, where it indicates the ‘result’ (i.e. understanding) that follows the action of the first verb (i.e. listening, reading).

For example:

(คุณ)รู้เรื่องไหม /(kun) rúu rʉ̂ang mái/  means  “Do you understand?”

(คุณ)ฟังรู้เรื่องไหม /(kun) fang rúu rʉ̂ang mái/  means  “Do you understand? (by listening)”

(คุณ)อ่านรู้เรื่องไหม /(kun) àan rúu rʉ̂ang mái/   means  “Do you understand? (by reading)”

It is the resultative verb that is used for ‘yes’ answers and which is negated for ‘no’ answers.

For example:

(คุณ)ฟังรู้เรื่องไหม /(kun) fang rúu rʉ̂ang mái/  means  “Do you understand? (by listening)”

–  (ฟัง)รู้เรื่อง /(fang) rúu rʉ̂ang/

Yes.

–  (ฟัง)ไม่รู้เรื่อง /(fang) mâi rúu rʉ̂ang/

No.

Similarly, in negative statements, it is the resultative verb that is negated.

For example:

ไม่รู้เรื่อง /(fang) mâi rúu rʉ̂ang/  means  “I don’t understand.”

ฟังไม่รู้เรื่อง /fang mâi rúu rʉ̂ang/  means  “I don’t understand. (what I hear)”

อ่านไม่รู้เรื่อง /àan mâi rúu rʉ̂ang/   means  “I don’t understand. (what I read)”

So I hope now you know how say and use the verb to understand in Thai. Do you understand?  Please comment on my Thai lesson – thank you.
