สมน้ำหน้า | It Serves You Right | Thai Idiomสวัสดีค่ะ Hello everyone, How have you been doing?
Today I will teach you the Thai idiom สมน้ำหน้า (sǒm-nám-nâa.), “Serve you right” or “In your face”.
For example
A: ฉันสอบตก (chán sɔ̀ɔp dtòk)
I failed my exam.
B: จริงเหรอ ทำไมล่ะ (jing lɔ̌ɔ, tam-mai lâ?)
Really? Why?
A: เพราะว่าฉันไม่ได้อ่านหนังสือ (prɔ́-wâa chán mâi dâi àan nǎng-sʉ̌ʉ)
Because I didn’t read any books. (I didn’t study for the exam)
B: สมน้ำหน้า (sǒm-nám-nâa!)
It serves you right!
New Vocabulary
สำนวน /sǎm-nuan/ = idiom
สอบ /sͻ̀ͻp/ = to take a test
สอบตก /sͻ̀ͻp-dtòk/ = to fail the test
จริง /jing/ = true, real
เหรอ /rə̌ə/ = word used to end yes/no question
ทำไม /tam-mai/ = why?
ล่ะ /là/ = particle used at the end of a question
เพราะว่า /prͻ́-wâa/ = because
ไม่ได้ /mâi-dâai/ = did not
อ่าน /àan/ = to read
หนังสือ /nǎng-sʉ̌ʉ/ = book
หน้า /nâa/ =face
Anyway, this idiom is to be used carefully as this is a little rude, please be careful when you use it. ^_^
