How to ask “What doesThai Language School teaching the advanced way that mean?” in Thai

If you are learning Thai you will need to ask this at some point! We try to explain this in this bite sized Thai lesson.

In Thai we have two ways of asking ‘What ….. means?’

1. แปลว่าอะไร /bplae wâa à-rai/   or

2. หมายความว่าอะไร /mǎai kwaam wâa à-rai/

แปลว่าอะไร /bplae wâa à-rai/ is literally a request for a translation, while หมายความว่าอะไร /mǎai kwaam wâa à-rai/ is asking for clarification or an explanation.

For example:

1. …… ภาษาอังกฤษแปลว่าอะไร /paa-sǎa ang-grìt bplae wâa à-rai/

= …… what does that mean in English?

2. ที่เขาพูด หมายความว่าอะไร /tîi káo pûut mǎai kwaam wâa à-rai/

= The things he said, what does it means?

I hope this helps you speak Thai a little better if you don’t understand you can always ask one of the above questions 🙂
