Learn Thai: Ambiguous Sentences

Ambiguous Sentences

According to Thai grammar rules, there are no spaces between words in the Thai language so sometimes some this can make the sentences ambiguous and it is possible to make misunderstandings!

In the Thai language, if you read making a word break incorrectly, some sentences will become funny and definitely wrong.

Some Thai grammar examples,

“ห้าม! พนักงานหญิงใส่กางเกงในเวลาเข้าประชุม”
/hâam! pá-nák-ngaan yǐng sài gaang-geng, nai we-laa kâo bprà-chum/
= The female staffs are not allowed to wear the trousers in the meeting time.

If you read with the wrong space, it would be

/hâam! pá-nák-ngaan yǐng sài gaang-geng-nai, we-laa kâo bprà-chum/
= The female staffs are not allowed to wear the underpants when having the meeting!

กางเกง  /gaang-geng/                =       trousers
กางเกงใน /gaang-geng-nai/    =       underpants

Mmmm… in this case, it should be the first meaning, shouldn’t it? 🙂 …and even that sounds strange!

Hope you enjoyed learning Thai Grammar  (be careful ^_^)
